Graduate Student Handbook

Summer Teaching Assignments

Summer teaching assignments in the Department or the University Writing Program may be available but are not guaranteed. Students should use the pre-registration system to indicate desire for summer teaching.

Priority for summer appointments will be given to international students, because they are restricted from working outside the University. Non-international PhD, MA, and MFA students will then be considered, taking into account Department need (in terms of courses offered), progress in the program (as evidenced by successful completion of courses, timely movement into exams or thesis work, and other indications), previous summer appointments, and other factors.

Because summer teaching priority is based partly on progress in the program, it is especially important to resolve Incompletes as quickly as possible.

MA and MFA students who are not going on for the PhD: you should be aware that summer teaching is not normally extended during the summer after the end of your degree program. MA and MFA students admitted to the PhD program may be considered for appointment.
